Kek Lok Tong, 极乐洞, the Cave of Ultimate Bliss at Gunung Rapat, reopened on 3 Oct 2026. Kek Lok Society chairman Zeng Yaotang, 曾耀棠, told Sin Chew's Perak desk on 4 Oct that the cave and park are open again for walks and worship after a closure that began on 7 Oct 2024. The stoppage lasted just under two years. Flood water from the neighbouring mining lake had been rising into the park, filling the stream along the cliff and soaking even the base of an electrical pylon.
Why the park shut, and what changed
Sin Chew photographer Wong Kian Heng walked the grounds the day after reopening. Clockwise from the entrance you still meet the Eighteen Arhats first. The cave behind them is the same vast limestone hall Ipoh people already know, Buddha figures under stalactites, a rear passage out to the lake garden. What you would not have seen in 2023 is the work that kept the gate locked.
Zeng Yaotang said management spent the two years on more than pumping. The society commissioned a cave-structure assessment, monitoring, and safety upgrades, and it treated the flood path from the mining lake as a live risk, not a one-off wet week. The park sits inside the Kinta Valley Geopark. Water does not stay a garden feature here. When the lake rises, the low ground goes under, and a public cave with electrical fittings is a bad place to guess.
The other visible change is underfoot. Stairs from the car park to both sides of the cave mouth have been rebuilt as ramps with handrails. Zeng's board framed that as an age-friendly and barrier-free move. It also reads as a practical answer to wet limestone, where a polished step is a slip even on a dry afternoon.
How to visit now
The 4 Oct briefing did not publish a new opening-hours board. Treat posted hours at the gate as the live rule, and do not lean on older guidebook times. Sin Chew's piece is clear on one operating limit: the cave closes again in bad weather. If the forecast is heavy rain over Gunung Rapat, check before you drive out. A reopening after flood damage is not a promise that the lake has retired.
Address is Persiaran Sepakat 3, Taman Endah Jaya, 31350 Ipoh, at the foot of Gunung Rapat. From Old Town it is a short taxi along Jalan Gopeng, then into the Endah Jaya / Sepakat turn. Sam Poh Tong sits on the same hill mass, so a cave morning can cover both if the weather holds. Our longer walk-through of Ipoh's cave temples, including Kek Lok Tong's lake garden and the old RM12 boat ride for two, is in the Ipoh cave temples guide. That guide still describes the space. This page is the 2026 status note: open again, ramps in, weather clause attached.
Entry has long been free, with donations accepted. The 4 Oct story does not announce a new ticket. Bring water. The cave is cool. The car-park ramble in October heat is not. Shoes with grip beat sandals on damp rock, even with the new ramps.
What this reopening actually restores
Kek Lok Tong is the largest of Ipoh's working cave temples, a limestone cathedral more than a shrine squeezed into a cleft. For two years that interior was off the public map while Sam Poh Tong and Perak Tong stayed open. Tour vans that used to pair a white-coffee breakfast with a Gunung Rapat cave loop lost the biggest chamber on that loop. Locals lost the park circuit, the Arhat row, and a quiet place that is also a religious hall.
The society is not claiming the flood problem is gone. It is claiming the cave was assessed, the approaches were rebuilt, and the public can come back under a weather rule. That is a narrower promise than a tourism poster, and it is the one worth packing for. If you last visited before October 2024, walk the ramps first. Then the cave. Then the garden, if the lake is behaving.
Gunung Rapat still holds more than this one mouth. Perak Tong's mural cave sits north of town on Jalan Kuala Kangsar. Sam Poh Tong is the 1912 neighbour on Jalan Gopeng. Kek Lok Tong's job on that list is scale, and as of 3 Oct 2026 that job is back on.
