First Garden's Friday pasar malam is the west-side food night Ipoh actually uses. Hawkers Association chairman Zhang Qibin, 张启斌, told Sin Chew it holds about 400 stalls, and about 70 percent of them sell food. Stalls start from 4pm. The crush is 7pm to 9pm. Most of the street is packed by 10pm. The address is Jalan Taman Ng Weng Hup, Taman Pertama, 30100 Ipoh. It is not Gerbang Malam, and it is not Old Town.
Sin Chew walked the lane on 19 July 2026. Reporters Wu Qiuyan and Zhong Huiqi named the stalls that still define a Friday. The hours have not moved since. If you only have one night market in you, and you want dinner rather than clothes, this is the Friday. Stadium is Wednesday. Garden East is Tuesday, now on a different street. Gerbang Malam on Jalan Dato Tahwil Azar is every night and leans clothes.
Who is actually cooking
Zhang himself has sold Pangkor ikan bilis and dried shrimp here for three years. He said some neighbours have been on the same pitch more than ten years. The crowd is local first. Indian families and visitors from China turn up as well, which is why you hear more than one language in the queue for stinky tofu.
- Wan Li Xiang, 万里香, Chen Rongying, 陈蓉颖. She has worked this Friday since she was seven. Thirty-five years. The stall sells bakkwa and shredded-pork bread. The loaf is baked to a size the stall specified, not a supermarket square. She told Sin Chew that people who left Ipoh still buy several packs when they are back.
- Lok lok, Luo Jinwen, 骆锦文. One of the older names on the street. Skewers in a communal pot. Eat standing.
- Garlic vermicelli oysters, Tang, 唐老板. A Chinese barbecue stall. Oysters come off the grill with garlic and glass noodles packed on top. You smell it before you see the queue.
- Fu Zai big-piece noodles, 富仔大块面, Lai Xiongchang, 赖雄昌. Second generation. Two fillings, original and pandan coconut. The pandan colour is leaf juice, not a bottle. Coconut inside.
- Tiramisu, snow skin, Basque cheesecake. Pan Zhini, 潘芷妮, and Zhang Yufeng, 张禹锋, both 27, left accountancy four years ago. They start the day's batch around 7am after school drop-off and open about 5pm. The stall is young. The queue is not only young.
The rest of the food is the usual Perak night-market mix, not a tasting menu. Stinky tofu with a line. Laksa packed to take home. Popiah. Big-piece noodles besides Fu Zai. Rou jia mo and other newer Chinese snacks sit next to stalls that have been here thirty years. Some people walk and nibble. Some come for one laksa and leave. Zhang's line is that food is why the Friday holds. Clothes are filler.
Peak is 7pm to 9pm. If you want bakkwa without standing in a pack, 4.30pm is kinder. Cash still works faster than a QR that drops on a wet folding table. Parking is neighbourhood roadside. It tightens after 7pm. Grab from KTM Ipoh is the honest move if you do not know Taman Pertama. First Garden is west of Old Town, toward the Falim and Menglembu side, not a walk from Concubine Lane.
Tuesday is Garden East, and it moved
Do not drive to the old Garden East pitch on a Tuesday. Sin Chew, 3 June 2026, reported the first night at the new site: Jalan Medan 3 and Jalan Medan 1 in Ipoh Baru, a J-shaped stretch about 600 metres. Three rows on Medan 3, two rows on Medan 1. ADUN Cui Cien, 崔慈恩, said the old ground is going to Indah Water works, so the move is meant to last. Three hundred and seventy stalls. About 200 hawkers opened that first night.
Hours there are the same shape, 4pm until about 10pm or 10.30pm, with 7pm to 9pm the peak. Some fried koay and sausage stalls sold out by 8pm or 9pm on opening night. Wan Li Xiang works that Tuesday too. Chen asked for the grass verge to be levelled so vans can unload. Bowl-fin soup hawker Zhong, 碗仔翅, said his new pitch is worse than the old one and that regulars still look for the previous street. Give yourself extra time for parking. The hawkers' association put seven committee members on the road that first night to point people in.
Gerbang Malam is the daily bazaar MBI lists under Perniagaan, on Jalan Dato Tahwil Azar. Clothes and gadgets more than a full dinner. Memory Lane on Jalan Horley is Sunday morning junk and copper, gone by lunch. First Garden Friday is the one you eat at. Garden East Tuesday is the other food grid, now on Medan 3 and Medan 1. Stadium on Wednesday is the third. Pick a night. Do not stack all four and call it Old Town.
