The Ipoh City Council (Majlis Bandaraya Ipoh, MBI) has turned Dataran Bandaraya Ipoh into an open-air football lounge for the FIFA World Cup 2026 knock-out stages, screening the semi-finals and the final live on a giant screen free of charge. The screenings run from 15 to 20 July 2026, with kick-off at 3.00 am Malaysian time for the matches beamed from the United States, Mexico and Canada. The slogan MBI has pinned to the campaign is "Satu Bandar, Satu Semangat, Satu Piala Dunia" — One City, One Spirit, One World Cup.
The semi-final that packed the square
More than 2,000 fans packed the square in the early hours of 16 July for the Argentina versus England semi-final, according to Ipoh Echo's on-the-ground report. Families arrived with picnic mats and folding chairs, many in replica jerseys, and every Argentine goal in the 2-1 win was met with roars that echoed across the city centre. MBI reported a similarly strong turnout the morning before, when more than 1,000 spectators turned up for the France versus Spain semi-final, which Spain won 2-0.
Ipoh Mayor Zamakhshari Hanipah attended the Argentina screening and presented a lucky draw that saw 15 visitors walk away with prizes. The mayor's presence underlined that this is a council-led community programme rather than a commercial fan zone — there is no entry fee, no F&B minimum spend, and no reserved seating. Turn up, find a spot on the flagstones, and watch.
What to expect on final night
The final screening is scheduled for 19 July 2026, again at 3.00 am, with the square opening well before kick-off. Based on the semi-final turnouts, arriving 60 to 90 minutes early is sensible if you want a clear sightline to the screen. Bring a mat or a low camping chair — MBI's own announcement specifically asks attendees to bring "tikar atau kerusi healing" — and a jacket, because Ipoh in the small hours drops to around 23 °C with the open square catching whatever breeze comes off the Kinta River.
There is no formal food and drink operation tied to the screening, but the Padang Ipoh area is a short walk from the late-night eateries around Jalan Sultan Iskandar and the Old Town coffee shops, which open from early morning. For the final, expect pop-up vendors around the square's perimeter selling snacks and drinks, as was the case during the semi-finals.
Getting there and practical notes
Dataran Bandaraya Ipoh sits in front of the MBI headquarters in Greentown, a five-minute drive or a 15-minute walk from the Ipoh Railway Station. Parking is available around the Greentown office blocks, but spaces fill quickly on match nights — car-pooling or a Grab is the saner option. The screening is open to all ages, and MBI has emphasised the family-friendly, "aman dan penuh semangat kesukanan" atmosphere of the semi-final nights as a model for the final.
One caveat: the matches finish around 5.00 am, so plan your ride home ahead of time. Ride-hailing supply thins out at that hour in Ipoh, and the surge back to residential areas like Bercham, Meru or Tambun can stretch the wait.
